Ways to Practice Sight words

Flashcards
Put sight words on flash cards and practice them in isolation.
-You can show cards to student and have him/her read them, spell them, and then read them again (read-spell-read).
-You can read one card at a time to the student and have him/her write them on a white board or paper.
-Have student select 5 cards a day and write those words in sentences.
-Have students arrange sight word cards to form sentences. Record sentences on a piece of paper.

Word Builder
Make new words from the words on the sight word list by changing the first letter or blend (practicing rhyming words)
example: last->fast

Memory
Select 20 words from the word list. Put each word on 2 flash cards. Place the words facing down. Each player turns two cards over and reads them. If the cards match, the player keeps them and goes again. If they do not match the player turns them back over. The player with the most pairs wins.

Word Scramble
 Write a word on a piece of paper. Cut the letters apart and scramble them. Have student unscramble the word and glue it down or write in on a piece of paper.

Magnetic Letters

Using magnetic letters and a cookie sheet, have student form sight words. You can also use the magnetic letters to do the word scramble activity.

Zap
Write sight words on popsicle sticks. Write the word “ZAP” on a few sticks. Place all sticks in a cup. Have players take turns drawing sticks and reading words. If they read it correctly, they keep the stick. If they get a “ZAP” they must put all their sticks back in the cup. This game can also be down with letter names and sounds.
